Numbness after a back lift: timeline, zings and permanence
Numbness around the scar is universal after a bra-line back lift — the excision crosses the fine sensory nerves of the back skin. Feeling returns over 6–18 months with tingling and 'zings'; a narrow band of reduced sensation along the scar can persist in a minority. Protect numb skin from heat.
Why it happens
The back's skin is supplied by small sensory nerves that climb from the sides and along the spine. The excision and the lifting of the adjacent skin cross them; the muscles beneath keep their own nerves, so movement is unaffected — it is the skin's reporting lines that pause.
The recovery pattern
Months 0–3: numb or oddly firm-feeling skin around and below the scar. Months 2–8: nerves regrow at millimetres per day, and regrowth is noisy — tingling, itching, sudden electric 'zings', patches of hypersensitivity where a vest seam suddenly registers. Months 6–18: the map refills from the edges inward; the strip immediately along the scar recovers last and least.
Two practical rules
Heat: hot-water bottles, heating pads, saunas and hot car seats can burn skin that can't complain — test with a hand, always. Pressure: bra bands and vest seams over numb skin can chafe unnoticed; check the skin daily in a mirror.
When numbness is a message instead
Spreading numbness beyond the expected zone, new numbness weeks later, or numb skin that turns dusky, cold or blistered — photograph and message the same day; those patterns concern circulation, not nerve recovery. The expected version needs only patience and sunscreen.
