Glossary: back lift terms, defined plainly
The vocabulary of back contouring is small but confusing, and clinics use it loosely. These are the definitions as used on this site — each one short enough to quote.
Definitions
- Bra-line back lift
- Surgical excision of the loose skin and fat of the upper/mid back through a horizontal incision at bra-band level; the scar hides under a bra or bikini-top band. Also called upper back lift.
- Upper back lift
- Synonym for bra-line back lift.
- Lower back lift
- Removal of loose lower-back and flank skin through a beltline incision; performed as the back half of a lower body lift or as an extended tummy tuck.
- Lower body lift (belt lipectomy)
- A circumferential lift around the waist — tummy tuck in front, lower back and buttock lift behind — for massive-weight-loss skin excess.
- Upper body lift
- A planned combination of bra-line back lift with arm lift and/or breast lift after massive weight loss, performed in one session or two stages.
- Brachioplasty (arm lift)
- Removal of hanging upper-arm skin through an inner-arm incision from elbow to armpit, or a short armpit scar for mild cases.
- Mastopexy (breast lift)
- Reshaping and elevating a descended breast; after weight loss often combined with auto-augmentation or implants.
- Auto-augmentation
- Using the patient's own lateral chest tissue — the excess beside the bra line — to add volume to a lifted breast instead of an implant.
- Liposuction
- Removal of fat through small cannulas without removing skin; effective only where the skin can shrink to the new volume.
- Pinch test
- Lifting a roll between thumb and fingers: a fold that hangs when released is skin excess (excision needed); a firm cushion that springs back is fat under elastic skin (liposuction).
- Seroma
- A collection of clear fluid under lifted skin; the most common minor complication after a back lift, drained by needle in clinic.
- Compression vest
- A fitted garment worn 4–6 weeks after a back lift to limit swelling and fluid, support the closure and reduce tension on the scar.
- Drain
- A thin tube removing fluid from under the skin in the first days after surgery; used selectively and removed within days.
- Quilting sutures
- Internal stitches that tack the lifted skin down to the underlying tissue to close the space where fluid would collect, reducing seroma risk and sometimes replacing drains.
- Layered closure
- Closing the deep tissue with dissolving sutures that carry the tension, so the skin sutures carry none — the technique behind a fine scar.
- Hypertrophic scar
- A scar that is raised and red within the wound's boundaries; treated with silicone, steroid injection or laser, usually improving with time.
- Keloid
- A scar that grows beyond the wound's boundaries; rare on the back, assessed individually in patients with a history of keloids.
- DVT / pulmonary embolism
- A blood clot in a leg vein, which can travel to the lungs; prevented with compression, early walking and, in higher-risk patients, medication — especially around long flights.
- Nicotine rule
- No cigarettes, vapes, patches, gum or pouches for at least 4 weeks before and after surgery; nicotine constricts the small vessels feeding the closure.
- GLP-1 medications
- Semaglutide/tirzepatide-type weight-loss drugs; patients should reach a stable plateau before a back lift because skin removed during active loss loosens again.
- USHAŞ
- Turkish Ministry of Health international health-tourism authorisation; Dr. Erdal's number is 2026034015610080000444996.
- FACS
- Fellow of the American College of Surgeons — an American credential awarded after credential and practice review.
- FEBOPRAS
- Fellow of the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery — the European board examination held by UK and EU plastic surgeons.
Questions patients ask
What is the difference between an upper back lift and a bra-line lift?
None — they are the same operation; 'bra-line' describes where the scar is placed.
What does 'excision' mean in back surgery?
Removing a measured ellipse of skin and fat, as opposed to liposuction, which removes fat only. Folds of loose skin need excision.
What is a lower body lift?
A circumferential lift around the waist — tummy tuck in front, lower back and buttock lift behind — for massive-weight-loss skin excess.
